“Chasing Painted Comber” Project Picture 39/365
Nikon D90 Nikkor 60mm 1/60 f/16.0 ISO 100
This fish is a “Serranus Scriba” and is of the same specie I posted here but much more smaller, arround 10-12 cm, I quite like the patterns on their face, and it is the reason why scientifics used the “scriba” on its name.
They have this interesting behaviour so if you approach them, they will confront you in an attempt to defend their territory, probably this has caused them many problems with speargun divers as makes them an easy capture; this picture was taken at a depth of arround 6 meters were, due to overfishing, it is difficult to find individuals bigger that this one.
Photographically speaking it is a great angle to use as you are at eye level and you can capture their expression, also if you place the eyes in sharp focus, and select an open aperture the reduced depth of field will enhance your picture as the gradual loss of focus on their body will look great. For this one I used f/16.0 though, with f/8.0 or even f/5.6 will have worked much better.
